As the U.S. prepares to take on another bout of cold weather, the term "polar vortex" is getting thrown around. But what is it?

National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm that contains large amounts of snow or blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time (at least 3 hours).

Lake County Transit will provide free transportation to cold weather shelters. via fixed route (LakeXpress). Residents who are unable to reach a shuttle stop and need transportation to the cold weather shelter on Saturday or Sunday must call Lake County Connection at 352-742-2612 before 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 to make arrangements.

A proposed policy would mirror Lansing's Code Blue program and would activate city-owned facilities and community partners when temperatures become life-threatening.

After a historic cold snap hit Florida, the Sunshine State isn’t in the clear yet, as cold weather is expected in the coming week. On Sunday, it was Miami’s coldest Feb. 1 on record, and the 35° low temp was the coldest since 2010.

Crews in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky are working around the clock to fix water main breaks caused by persistent cold temperatures.

In preparation for the cold front, warming centers are planning to open across Central Florida for those in need.

On Monday at 6:28 a.m. the National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory in effect until 10 a.m. for Oneida, Madison, Chenango and Otsego counties.
