During the White Phase of Basic Training, Trainees are exposed to Land Navigation, where they learn how to successfully move through terrain with only a compass, map, and protractor. Trainees going through Basic Training, or One Station Unit Training, #OSUT, are exposed to Land Navigation during the "White" Phase of Basic Training. During this familiarization, Trainees learn how to plot coordinate points, shoot an azimuth, maintain a pace count, and identify terrain features.
