At bare minimum there are different expectations for different fields of study in terms of the types of classes you should’ve taken in high school and the kinds of ECs you likely should’ve been involved in during high school. This is true even for colleges where more than half of students switch majors after getting admitted! Otherwise, you’d see some colleges “known for X field of study” enrolling 99% students expressing interest in X field of study and colleges dynamically resizing departments
